The former mayor of Bogota as well as a former senator of Republic was the winner of the Historic Pact alliance and officially was elected to the presidency of the Republic which that he's aspired to in the past three years.
The overwhelming majority in the consultation leads to him being the most representative persona of the Colombian left and a strong candidate for president, despite his controversial proposals and views on a variety of fronts, including the one on economics.
gustavo petro Petro expressed his desire to reform the pension system by creating an administrator public to oversee pension funds. https://www.washingtonpost.com/es/post-opinion/2022/04/19/elecciones-colombia-2022-gustavo-petro-juan-fernando-petro-perdon/ This would allow Petro to combine the public and private funds to create a "mixed and complementary system."
The candidate claimed that Colombia doesn't have a retirement system, but instead an institution that generates bank profits. Many believe that this would stop him from becoming President. Petro has recently stated that he will not abolish the system, but he would call for reforms to pensions so that they can provide an income that is minimum for Colombians. He stated, however, that it wasn't necessary to increase the age of retirement.

Another topic of contention is his repeated vows to stop oil extraction when his presidency begins. This has caused uncertainty for investors and the general market.
The experts estimate that Petro's plans to end oil exploration would cost Colombia around $4.3 billion.
Added to this proposal is the creation of an anti-oil front in the region and the world to move away from fossil fuels to which I would invite the president-elect of Chile, Gabriel Boric, as well as the Brazilian Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as well as others.
Petro claimed that he talked to Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain regarding his idea.
His position on health concerns is also controversial. He has insistent on eliminating EPS in order to replace it with a preventive system that "guarantees both the rights of people and the profit of bankers".
Gustavo Petro He also has questioned the independence of Banco de la Republica.
Petro declared that the Bank Board of Directors belongs to the Democratic Center. Accordingly, the candidate at the center of a discussion said "What do we want? A truly independently run Bank of the Republic (...) It is to me essential that the Board of Directors is a part of the society."
According to Invamer, Petro leads the voting intention for the presidential election.
